Project Overview

This project involves the replacement of a portion of the exterior building envelope on Saint Mary’s University’s Loyola Residence, transforming the renewal effort into a landmark green energy demonstration project for Atlantic Canada. Rather than using traditional cladding materials, the project incorporated photovoltaic (solar) panels extending from the 22nd storey down to the 3rd floor on the south façade facing Gorsebrook Avenue.

This initiative represents the largest building-integrated photovoltaic retrofit of its kind in North America, setting a precedent for sustainable campus infrastructure in the region. The installation is designed to generate approximately 3,000,000 Wh of clean energy annually, contributing significantly to the University’s sustainability goals and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 2,280 tonnes of CO₂ over 30 years.

As Project Manager, responsibilities include resource management, coordination with the client, design team, and authorities having jurisdiction, and management of budget, schedule, and communications. The project requires close collaboration among technical specialists to balance performance, aesthetics, and constructability while maintaining residence operations throughout construction.

Project Highlights

  • Advanced a green energy demonstration project that establishes Saint Mary’s University as a leader in sustainable infrastructure innovation.
  • Supported the integration of renewable energy technology within an occupied high-rise residence environment.
  • Contributed to the University’s long-term carbon reduction and energy efficiency objectives through effective planning and stakeholder collaboration.
